How to Prepare a Tech Pack for a Sweater RFQ

A tech pack is the clearest way to tell a factory what you want. This guide explains the sections that matter most for a sweater — and what to do if you do not have a full tech pack yet.

What a tech pack does

A tech pack converts a design into measurable, repeatable instructions. For sweater production, it tells the factory how the garment is made, measured and finished. When it is complete, costing is faster, samples are closer to target, and quality checks have a clear benchmark.

The drawing

Start with a flat sketch of front, back and sleeves. Add call-outs for features: neckline, cuff, placket, pockets and any trims. The drawing does not need to be a professional sketch — a clear, annotated image communicates more than a vague description.

The measurement spec

Provide a size set with body measurements for at least two or three sizes. Include the critical points for knitwear:

• body length and chest width
• sleeve length and width at bicep and cuff
• neck width and drop
• shoulder width

If your sizes are in inches and the factory works in centimetres, say so explicitly and include the size grading.

Yarn and construction

State the yarn blend and count if you know them, and the gauge or knit structure you want. If the decision is open, describe the hand-feel and the target price — a sourcing partner can then propose yarn options that fit both.

Finishing and trims

List every step after knitting: wash or treatment, printing, embroidery, buttons, zips, labels and any special finishing. Trims affect both cost and lead time, so they should be on the tech pack, not decided later.

If you do not have a tech pack yet
